What are the Academies?

Hi! I'm Abbie and I started the Why Not Languages GCSE French & Spanish Academies to help students achieve their personal best in their exams, encourage collaborative learning and most of all to make languages fun!!

The GCSE French & Spanish Academies are aimed at Year 11 students who want to improve their grades and ace their exams.

It's essentially online language tuition, which will take place in weekly group classes run by me. You will also have access to 24/7 tutor support through Google Classroom - read on to find out more!

If you have any questions about whether this is the right fit for you or your child, I would suggest booking a free consultation meeting with me, which you can do here.

Why Join Our Academies?

AFFORDABLE

You will have access to high quality tuition and resources, without having to pay for private 1-1 sessions each week. Over the year this could save you hundreds of pounds!

INTERACTIVE

Each session will allow you to interact with other students, so you can collaborate and share ideas with each other, as well as undertaking your own work.

PRACTICAL

Your GCSE French or Spanish work and revision schedule will be mapped out for the whole academic year, which means you won't have to worry about cramming!

The Classes

  • The class sizes will be maximum 5 students per class

  • There will be two sessions per week - one hour long session and one half an hour speaking session per week

  • All classes will be live and delivered through Zoom

  • All classes are also recorded and uploaded to the Google Drive afterwards, so you can easily catch up if you miss a session

  • All resources and class recordings will be in a Google Drive folder so students can access them at any time

  • Each student will have their own Google Drive folder in which they can do their work, upload work to be marked etc…

  • Each student will also be part of a Google Classroom, so they can ask me and their fellow students questions at any time

  • Classes will be interactive and (hopefully!!) fun - we will be covering a range of different activities to cover all skills required at GCSE level

Computer Keyboard

What will we be covering?

  • All sessions are based entirely on the GCSE French & Spanish syllabuses

  • The Academies are based on the AQA syllabus but also cater to students studying Edexcel (the syllabuses are very similar and only certain things will need to be tweaked)

  • We will cover grammar, vocabulary and the topics (environment, holidays, technology, family etc…)

  • The last 5 minutes of each hour-long lesson will be a vocabulary test, so students can keep up to date with vocabulary - remember that learning new vocabulary is a marathon not a sprint!!

  • We will look at exam techniques to help you smash your exams!! This includes reading, listening, writing and translation, as well as what we will cover in the speaking sessions (including practising photo cards, role plays etc…)

  • There will be a focus on past papers, especially leading up to exam seasons (mocks and summer exams)

  • I will be setting extra work students can complete outside of lessons - this is not obligatory and only if the student wishes to further their progress

  • Any completed completed can be uploaded into your own personal Google Drive folder to be marked by me

  • I will be giving monthly feedback to both students and parents via email (or via a Zoom meeting upon request)

  • Everything we cover will be tracked in a lesson tracker sheet in the Google Drive

Class Schedules

  • French: speaking session Mondays 6:30-7pm, lesson Tuesdays 7-8pm

  • Spanish: lesson Mondays 7-8pm, speaking session Tuesdays 6:30-7pm

  • These dates and times may be subject to change and will be confirmed at the start of September

  • During school holidays (October half term, Christmas, February half term, Easter and May half term) there will be one hour long session, in which we will solely focus on exam practice - the date and time of these sessions will be confirmed nearer the time and depending on students’ schedules

Reviews

Hollie, Year 11 French & Spanish Student

Hi, just wanted to message to say thank you so much for all of your help since I joined the academy. I’ve now finished both French and Spanish speaking and I’m so happy with how they’ve gone. Speaking was the aspect of the course that I was always so nervous for but the academy has helped me to overcome these nerves and feel confident in my ability. I’ve learnt so much since January and your endless support has been greatly appreciated. I honestly couldn’t recommend you more! I’m so proud of how I’ve performed in the two exams, I’ve used tenses and phrases that I wouldn’t have even known about if I hadn’t joined the academy, so thank you! No matter what the result is, I’m already so happy with the progress that I’ve made. Your academy was so worth it and I’m so pleased that I joined!

Taz, Year 11 Spanish Student

Hi Abbie, I just wanted to say thank you for providing the lessons that you have for the past couple of months for my Spanish GCSE. I'm really sorry I didn't attend the last few sessions but I have been incredibly busy with my exams. Despite this, I have been using the resources on google drive and watched a couple of the lessons back including the writing sessions which have been very useful. The lessons have genuinely helped me a lot, my listening and reading exams honestly went quite well due to the practice I obtained from these sessions. The practice Mock speaking you did with me also helped a lot with the real thing. I didn't realise it but it did aid my confidence to develop and I noted down your tips and used them!  My writing is tomorrow so hopefully, it goes well. Anyway, thank you, you have been a lot of help and I have enjoyed the sessions with you a lot. I'll definitely recommend your classes to any family or friends who might need help with Spanish or French. :) I hope you have a great summer too when it comes.

Sam, Parent

Hi Abbie, just a quick note to say thank you so much for all you have done to help Alex with his French. This time last year, he was really struggling with the subject and, through working with you, he has really improved and actually started to enjoy French. We’ll let you know what grade he comes out with but I received a call from his French teacher, a week or so ago, to say how impressed she was with the improvement he’d shown. We’re so grateful to you. Many thanks, Sam
